Alan Varney, a proud educator in Dallas ISD for 20 years was born in Boston and raised in Somerville, MA. After graduating from Somerville High School, he attended Bentley University in Waltham, MA, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems. Mr. Varney joined the workforce as a database analyst and spent three years in the private sector.

As a history enthusiast, Mr. Varney left the private sector to become a teacher. He attended the University of Massachusetts and earned a Masters of Education Degree with an emphasis in Urban Education. After student teaching for a year in Cambridge Public Schools. Mr. Varney moved to Dallas in 2004. He began his journey in Dallas ISD at Skyline High School, teaching Social Studies and coaching Academic Decathalon. In 2008, he became a district instructional coach for the Social Studies Department, serving middle school in Pleasant Grove and West Dallas until 2011.

Mr. Varney then spent 2011 until 2015 teaching Social Studies at A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School where he focused on creating authentic real-world projects. While at New Tech, he earned a Masters of Education Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2015, Mr. Varney became an assistant principal at H. Grady Spruce High School and was the leader of Spruce Early College, where students earned degrees in HVAC, CADD, Mechatronics, or Digital Media. Currently, he is serving in the role of Principal Resident at Woodrow Wilson High School.

As an educator, Mr. Varney believes in challenging students sto they can develop skills to problem solve, collaborate, and take ownership of their learning. Mr. Varney is married with a five-year old son. He enjoys cooking, listening to music, watching Boston sports, traveling, and spending time with his family.
